    El argentino Guillermo Cañas jugará mañana por un lugar en la final del torneo de tenis de Miami tras ganarle hoy al español Tommy Robredo por 7-6 (7-5) y 6-1 en semifinales.

    Cañas, se mostró más sólido que su rival a lo largo de un partido que tuvo un  equilibrado primer set. Su rival por el pase al encuentro decisivo será el croata Ivan Ljubicic, vencedor hoy del argentino Juan Chela por 6-3 y 7-5.

    Ljubicic, número siete del ranking mundial, fue claramente superior a Chela, 25 de la clasificación, en un partido jugado previamente hoy.     Federer esta vez, no se salvó de las críticas, ni siquiera en su propio país.  En Suiza, destacan los medios: “Willy: fue el verdugo y Roger no estuvo seguro en su juego por lo ocurrido la última vez entre ellos“. El diario “Blick“, en su portada muestra la cara de un Federer resignado,  destaca el trabajo de Cañas y escribe sobre el miedo de Roger al enfrentarse con el argentino.

    La decisión se ha tomado después de los problemas que se produjeron en Buenos Aires y Las Vegas, donde hubo varios casos polémicos, sembrando el desconcierto entre jugadores y público. En  Las Vegas, precisamente, el presidente de la ATP, el surafricano Etienne de Villiers tuvo que pedir disculpas públicamente por un error en la aplicación de las reglas cuando se decidió en principio la errónea clasificación de un jugador.

    En Estoril, uno de los que había incluído el ’round robin’ en su cuadro, solicitó a la ATP que le permitiera volver a la idea original. “Hemos tenido en cuenta a todos para decidir, especialmente a nuestros jugadores y los torneos jugados“.

    “Ha sido un buen experimento y hemos aprendido mucho de ello. Algunos funcionan y otros no, pero seguiremos intentando encontrar nuevos y mejores métodos para el crecimiento del tenis profesional masculino“, dijo Villiers.

    “No tengo quejas de todos estos años, formo parte de un grupo de tipos privilegiados; he viajado, conocido sitios bellos y siempre hay algo que lo sigue sorprendiendo a uno…”, ”estoy satisfecho por empezar el año con la gira latinoamericana por los torneos de Buenos Aires, Argentina, Costa Du Sauipe,  y Acapulco”.

    A los 30 años le cuesta mucho trabajo mantenerse en el top 50, pero le quedan cosas por hacer como  viajar a Indian Wells, torneo de la serie máster, donde no piensa en  ganar, pero sí,  puede sumar puntos para mejorar su ranking.

    “Siempre me preguntan cuando será, no tengo idea, yo lo veo lejísimo”.     

    Federer en la busca de Vilas, Borg y Connors

    Roger Federer puede, si gana dentro de dos semanas el torneo de Indian Wells, para lo que necesita cinco triunfos, igualar el récord de Guillermo Vilas de 46 triunfos consecutivos en 1977. Si a eso le suma ganar en su debut en el ATP Miami, el récord del marplatense pasará a la historia.”Es muy especial lo que estoy viviendo, tengo mucha confianza, estoy en una gran racha en este momento, siempre trato de lograr marcas, tengo otra oportunidad ahora. Voy a dar lo mejor, y sería fantástico quebrar ese récord, pero si no, lo intentaré alguna otra vez“, dijo Federer sobre el récord del argentino.

     Roger Federer al obtener ATP  Dubai igualó el récord de 41 victorias consecutivas del sueco Bjorn Borg y quedar a sólo seis de superar la marca absoluta del argentino Guillermo Vilas, quien sumó 46 triunfos sin interrupciones en 1977. 

    El lunes el suizo ya había quebrado otro récord, al superar con 161 semanas consecutivas la marca de 160 del estadounidense Jimmy Connors al frente del ranking mundial.
