    Sharapova, de 20 años y número cinco del mundo, se impuso por 7-5 y 6-3 en un partido sin grandes atractivos y disputado bajo un fuerte calor en Melbourne. La rusa había sido arrasada un año antes en la misma final por Serena Williams.

    En la ceremonia de entrega de premios Sharapova recordó aquel momento: “Recién se dijo que estuve muy cerca de ganar el torneo el año pasado, pero en realidad sólo gané tres juegos en la final. El año pasado fue un año bastante difícil para mí”, dijo con la voz quebrada, antes de dedicarle el triunfo a una amiga muerta.

    Ivanovic, que desde el lunes será la nueva número dos del tenis mundial, fracasó así en su intento de ganar un Grand Slam, tras haber sido derrotada en Roland Garros 2007 por Justine Henin en la final.

    “Quiero felicitar a Maria, estoy segura de que tendremos la oportunidad de jugar muchos partidos en el futuro“, dijo la serbia, que se quebró y lloró por unos instantes, claramente emocionada.

    El capitán ruso ha excusado en varias ocasiones a la tenista de origen siberiano: “Ya es un logro que Sharapova siga siendo rusa y no se haya nacionalizado estadounidense a pesar de residir en Florida desde los seis años de edad“.

    Hingis fue suspendida por dos años por la W.T.A

    La suiza Martina Hingis, que anunció en noviembre su retirada al mismo tiempo que su control positivo por cocaína en el último Wimbledon, fue suspendida dos años por la W.T.A.

    La sanción es deportiva y  económica, ya que  deberá devolver todo el dinero que ganó desde la competencia por la que fue sancionada. Hingis, ex número uno mundial, dio positivo el 29 de junio de 2007 y ella misma lo reveló al público en una rueda de prensa el 1 de noviembre en Zúrich., fue cuando decidió entonces poner punto final a su carrera, y se proclamó “100 por ciento inocente“.

    Días después, Hingis expresó su intención de impugnar los resultados de su control positivo. Pero no fue escuchada por la W.T.A, y una comisión independiente rechazó todas las alegaciones de la ex campeona.

    Hingis, de 27 años, fue suspendida dos años a partir del 1 de octubre de 2007, y todos sus resultados a partir de Wimbledon 2007 fueron anulados, así como las sumas ganadas durante este periodo, que se elevan a un total de 129.481 dólares (87.932 euros).

    Antes de retirarse definitivamente el pasado noviembre, había hecho un alto en su carrera en 2003 por las lesiones, antes de volver al más alto nivel en 2006

    Hingis, la número uno más joven de la historia con 16 años, seis meses y un día, dominó el tenis femenino entre 1997 y 2000, periodo durante el que ganó cinco títulos de Grand Slam.

 Wawrinka les tiene tomado el tiempo a los  argentinos

    El suizo, hoy le ganó en el ATP de Doha a Agustín Calleri por 6-3 y 6-0, y ya que había ganado anteriormente en Wimbledon y Basilea 2006.

    Ni el mejor Nalbandian pudo contra la tendencia a quien aventaja por 4-2 en el historial y hasta se dio el gusto de vencer al argentino en el único partido que separó los Masters de Madrid y de París del año pasado, ganados por Nalbandian, que significó además el cuarto triunfo consecutivo de Stanislas Wawrinka sobre el cordobés.

    Así sucede con la mayoría de los argentinos que conforman el top-100. Guillermo Cañas lo sufrió en Sttutgart 2007, en el único enfrentamiento que registran, y Juan Ignacio Chela fue su víctima en tres ocasiones, la última en el Masters de París, siendo la revancha del US Open, donde el argentino logró vencerlo por única vez.

    Wawrinka también supo vencer a José Acasuso, en Barcelona 2005 y en el Masters de Cincinnati 2006. A Juan del Potro le ganó en Umag 2006.

    Las excepciones vienen por el lado de los tenistas más “débiles” de La Legión. Martín Vassallo Argüello y Diego Hartfield son los únicos de este selecto grupo que tiene saldo a favor ante el suizo. El primero lo superó en Gstaad 2007 y el segundo, en Poertschach, también el año pasado.

    Por su parte, Juan Mónaco, Sergio Roitman y Carlos Berlocq nunca lo enfrentaron.Gastón Gaudio le ganó en Gstaad 2005 y con Mariano Puerta está 1-1 y jamás enfrentó a Guillermo Coria.
